Joann is a licensed acupuncturist in San Diego. She comes from a family of physicians and oriental medical doctors in Shanghai, China. Growing up, she witnessed and benefited from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).
Her parents decided that their older son would study Western Medicine and later become an orthopedic surgeon and she would become a student in Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine where her mother was a biochemistry professor. Joann graduated top of her class from the prestigious Shanghai University of TCM. She is one of the two recipient of "Li Yue Qing honor scholarship". She practiced both Chinese Medicine, acupuncture and Western Medicine as a physician in the teaching hospital affiliated with the University and successfully treated thousands of patients. She also taught medical students and visiting doctors.
She later came to the US and graduated with a Master's degree in Pharmacology from University of Kansas Medical Center. She is a member of The Endocrine Society due to her research in the bio- pharmaceutical industry in the area of women’s reproductive health, diabetes, etc. These experiences provided her with unique perspective and understanding of how Chinese Medicine and Western Medicine can work together and help patients. Joann was appointed as faculty member for Pacific College of Oriental Medicine in 2011. She had also given lectures to SDSU students.
Joann understands that many of today’s complex diseases require delving into the root cause of the problem, not just treating the symptoms. She also understands that the modern-day stressful life, changing environment and Western diet require that we be extra vigilant to maintain our health. That is why she is dedicated to combining her experience from both her Chinese and Western medicine background to help people achieve a balanced life.
Outside of the clinic Joann is a mother who enjoys taking walks and reading.
